The Department of Oral Microbiology was established to help students acquire fundamental knowledge of microorganisms related to oral diseases necessary for clinical education, and to integrate cutting-edge research technologies into the field of oral microbiology. The department plays a vital role in bridging the gap between theoretical microbiology and practical clinical applications. The main goals are to educate students on the microbiological and immunological mechanisms of oral health and disease, to advance diagnostic technologies for oral microbial infections, and to develop novel therapeutic strategies. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including general microbiology, virology, microbiological foundations of oral diseases, molecular immunology, and interactions between oral microorganisms and the host immune system. It also provides in-depth training in genetic and molecular biological approaches for studying oral microbial communities, as well as the application of omics technologies. Currently, the department’s major research focus lies in studying the functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from oral bacteria and their roles in oral cancer. These studies extend beyond elucidating the mechanisms of early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer, expanding into advanced research on the interconnections between extracellular vesicles and systemic diseases, including neurological disorders.
