Kyungpook National University School of Dentistry (KNUSD) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. In 1974, we began accepting freshmen into the Pre-Dental Program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Kyungpook National University. Since then, we have trained nearly 3,000 dentists with the goal of cultivating talented individuals who possess leadership capabilities, engage in creative inquiry and problem-solving to advance dentistry, gain patient-centered clinical experience, and fulfill their duty to serve humanity and society. Building on this rich history and tradition, we take pride in the fact that our alumni are spearheading the dental profession both in Korea and internationally.

To cultivate “truth-seeking individuals who lead future dentistry advancement through creative inquiry,” “positive individuals who combine a bright and virtuous character with professional expertise to provide the best possible patient care,” and “service-oriented individuals who fulfill social responsibilities for human oral health promotion,” School of Dentistry implements a self-directed learning system designed to develop high-level clinical competencies through standardized basic and clinical education. From the pre-dental and second year, students begin studying major subjects, and clinical education is designed to enhance treatment skills through three separate clinical practice programs organized by clinical diagnosis and individual treatment departments. In addition, a simulated patient program resembling real clinical practice is implemented, and training is further reinforced through the coordinated operation of seven clinical skills centers. In the curriculum system, we likewise aim for an integrated approach by incorporating demand-driven, student-customized content that reflects the needs of learners and contributions from high school-preparatory faculty. To support specialized and interdisciplinary education, we provide a variety of international programs and collaborative opportunities to help students develop competitive competencies in the global dental profession. To this end, the school has established a Future Innovation Officer and an Office of Educational Research directly under the Dean, improving the educational environment to foster the qualities of a research-oriented dental school and operating creative, interdisciplinary programs. As a result, we have produced the top-ranked graduates in the national dental licensure examination for four consecutive years, and in 2022, one of our graduates achieved the highest score ever recorded, and the faculty member who provided instruction was also recognized as an Outstanding Educator.

These achievements are the fruit of all members of our School of Dentistry dedicating themselves with passion to education, educational administration, facilities, research, clinical care, and service. In particular, based on mutual respect, trust, sharing, and communication among members, we are securing major research projects through regular departmental meetings and school-wide assemblies, leading to pioneering basic research. Recently, the foundation of our research activities has been strengthened through the establishment of the Digital and Clinical Information Research Convergence Center in Dentistry and the selection for the Graduate School of Dentistry Educational Infrastructure Development Project. Furthermore, through interdisciplinary convergence education, we are conducting collaborative education with the Dental Hospital, thereby expanding the curriculum based on this foundation and enhancing student clinical practice. Student clinical practice operates not only in basic research areas but also in connection with specialized clinical subjects and care systems at Kyungpook National University Dental Hospital to provide world-class treatment.

Going forward, our School of Dentistry will never forget our mission to contribute to promoting oral health for local communities, our nation, and ultimately all humanity worldwide.
